Martyr Mohammed Gamal “Masry”

This graffito is a tribute to martyr Mohammed Gamal “Masry,” an active participant in Tahrir sit-ins and member of pro-democracy committees who was stabbed on January 21, 2012 (four days before the anniversary of the continuing uprising in Egypt). The details of the stabbing are unclear; he had apparently been at a meeting in the Tahrir Square area on the evening of the 21st. On his way back to the sit-in, an unknown person stabbed him. He then stumbled back to the square and died.

This particular graffito is on a wall surrounding the American University in Cairo’s Tahrir Square campus. I’ve also seen it on other walls in downtown Cairo.
